Description

Beautiful herbarium with real flowers and plants from the Holy Land in mini book format made around 1917, texts in English and French: Flowers from the Holy Land. Fleurs de Terre Sainte. In Remembrance of the British Army conquerors of the Holy Land 9th December 1917.

Flowers of the Holy Land. In memory of the conquerors of the Holy Land of the British Army on December 9, 1917.

The herbarium consists of 11 beautiful plates with artistic compositions of flowers and plants from the Holy Land (Israel, Palestine, Judea). These are real dried plants, they are not illustrations.

Each herbarium plate is paired with a chromolithograph (plus one) of a place in the Holy Land: Jerusalem, Gethsemane, Mount of Olives, Valley of Jehoshaphat, Mosque of Omar, Rachel’s Tomb, Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, the Jordan River , Nazareth and Lake Tiberias.

The herbarium is dedicated to the “Conquerors of the Holy Land of the British Army, December 9, 1917.” This dedication refers to the conquest of Jerusalem by British troops within the framework of the First World War, against the troops of the Ottoman Empire.

Bound with thick olive wood covers, landscape format 16.5 x 10.8 cm. 24 pages, including 12 illustrations and 11 compositions of real, dried flowers and plants from the Holy Land.

There is no record of the actual year in which this herbarium was made, nor of who made it, nor if it is a unique and exclusive specimen, although it may seem that way. The common or scientific names of each plant are not described either, only the generic title of “Flowers of the Holy Land” is indicated in French and English in each composition. It appears to be a complete work and is in good condition despite being more than 100 years old. Some plant blades show slight losses and their viewing and handling must be done with great care.

Beautiful herbarium, curious and excellent specimen ideal for giving as a gift.
