Description

Book of art that can be considered as the complementary study book of the Book of Hours of Queen Leonor of Portugal, illuminated manuscript of the fifteenth century, also known as The Rich Hours of Vrelant, masterpiece of the Grisaille miniature (grisaille technique), whose original is preserved in the National Library of Portugal, sign. Il. 165

When, in 2007, the Sorlí publishing house published the beautiful facsimile of the Book of Hours of the Queen Doña Leonor de Portugal, it did not publish the complementary study book that usually accompanies this type of luxury editions, and never did it afterwards. This book represents an opportunity to complete the work, with a complete and monographic study of the best that has been able to accompany any facsimile edition.

The author of this excellent study is Dr. Delmira María Rita dos Santos Espada Custódio, from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Nova University of Lisbon.

Studio beautifully printed by hand and bound by hand in simile red leather, ribs and golden titles on the spine, format 16.5 x 22 cm, 500 pages on laid paper, color illustrations, guide tape, texts in Portuguese. Complete and profusely illustrated work.

The original codex belongs to the third quarter of the fifteenth century, ca. 1470, from the workshop of Wilhem Vrelant, of Bregues, which was active between 1454 and 1482. The so-called Book of Hours of the Queen Doña Leonor, wife of Juan II of Portugal, is considered one of the great treasures of the National Library From Portugal. It is characterized by the extreme delicacy of the tracing of the marginal ornamentations, which are never repeated, in which the stylized vegetal motifs, animals, human and fantastic figures, are intertwined in great profusion by the illustrations and by the dominant colors of this work: gray, black and gold, grisaille, except for the strong blue of the sky in some scenes. That is why it is a beautiful Book of Hours rare and extremely curious in its color, a unique copy that should not be missing in your collection and in your Library.
