Ms. codex 11040 of the Royal Library of Belgium, which became a rigorous facsimile edition, is the oldest and luxurious few copies have survived. Alexander’s novel, in old French prose, modeled on the narrative of Proeliis, History of battles, written in the tenth century by the archpriest Lion of Naples. Its content in addition to narrating historical events has become an adventure novel with descriptions of exotic voyages and legends that reflect the spirit of the feudal society of the Middle Ages, being most read after the Bible. In the East he was considered to Alexander the Great, called Iskander, the winner of the Persian king and a great benefactor. The twelfth-century Persian sources even recognize him as a prophet and represented their fabulous exploits in beautiful illustrations.
