Description

Declared World Heritage, this publication in SUMO format presents the most beautiful murals of the Tibetan Buddhist culture, preserved to this day. Amazing and complex, these masterpieces can be enjoyed for the first time with the maximum resolution and dazzling colors. Signed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, this book is a revelation for scholars and practitioners of Tibetan culture, Buddhism, yoga, meditation and mindfulness.

Collector’s Edition (copies from No. 81 to 998) signed by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and accompanied by a lectern designed by Shigeru Ban.

Between towering snow-capped mountains, deep valleys and desolate deserts, some of the greatest masterpieces of Buddhist culture and Tibetan heritage are hidden. For more than a decade, photographer Thomas Laird toured the most remote corner of the Tibetan plateau to capture in all its immensity, complexity and spiritual, emotional and psychological richness the spectacular Buddhist murals.

With the help of new digital techniques of multiple images, Laird created with a resolution on a real scale the first archive of these works of art made on walls that, in some cases, reach up to 10 meters. This impressive publication presents the collection of Laird photographs in XL format, with six foldouts, published in five colors, including gold. By including both complete murals and abundant details of them, it offers readers unprecedented access to these exceptional works of art.

In recognition of this world heritage and the preservation of Tibetan culture, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has signed all copies of this Collector’s Edition. In this 528-page guide, Buddhist scholar and writer Robert Thurman accompanies us on a transcendental journey through detailed texts on the spiritual significance of murals, while photographic descriptions by specialists Heather Stoddard and Jakob Winkler analyze the context artistic of each image.

As his Holiness the Dalai Lama has explained, these murals are not only objects full of artistic beauty, but serve as reference points and guidance to practitioners of Buddhism, yoga and meditation, as well as anyone who wishes to incorporate mindfulness (full consciousness) to your daily life. Fusing contemporary photographic technology with ancestral traditions, this book is a majestic work of art, a key piece for the understanding of Buddhism, a valuable tribute to the Tibetan culture and a source of inspiration for the contemplative sciences and arts.

Limited Collector’s edition of 998 copies (copies of No. 81 to 998) in SUMO format signed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and accompanied by a lectern designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect and humanitarian activist Shigeru Ban.

It was also published in two limited editions of Art of 40 copies each (copies of No. 1 to 40 (already sold out) and 41 to 80, available here), both with a printed sheet.

Volume of the year 2013, texts in English, in hardcover signed by the Dalai Lama, format 50 x 70 cm, 498 pages, 6 fold-out, with folding lectern designed by Shigeru Ban and accompanying illustrated guide of 528 pages.

The book Murals of Tibet, by Thomas Laird, published by TASCHEN, is a unique treasure; a timeless gift of Tibet to the world, not only for this generation but for future generations.
