The scarab is a famous image from Ancient Egyptian art and iconography, representing the Scarabaeus sacer, a species of dung beetle. The dung beetle is associated with the gods because it formed a ball of dung into which it laid its eggs, and the dung provided food for the young when they hatched. In this way, life arose from death.
