Description

“El Cantar de los Cantares”, Spanish edition of FMR-ARTE 2007, with which the Italian publishing house starts the collection “Livres del peintre” dedicated to artist’s books.

It is a volume, which includes the Latin translation of the “Song of Songs” with the comments of the English theologian Alcuino of York (735-804). The book also has eight poems written by the Genoese poet Edoardo Sanguinetti for this edition and interpret, in a jocular way, some of the most significant passages of “The Song of Songs.”

For the cover of this volume, the Italian artist Ugo Nespolo has made an original work, entitled “Lo Strappacuori” and is made in eight colors in enamel on brass plate treated and bathed in 24 carat gold. Each copy of “Lo Strappacuori” carries the numbering, the signature of the author and comes accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and provenance. Nespolo has also created for this edition a total of eight color tables, which illustrate different moments of the text of “The Song of Songs.”

This edition, which inaugurates the collection “Livres del Peintre”, has a limited print run of 150 copies numbered and signed by the artist Ugo Nespolo.

“The Song of Songs” (from the Hebrew Shir Hashirim or “Sing for excellence”) or “Song of Solomon”, is one of the books that compose the Bible. Written, probably between the sixth and fourth centuries BC. By an unknown author, consists of 1,250 words distributed in 117 verses and 8 chapters. It is a lyric poem, or perhaps a selection of poems, that sings the love between two young people and that is written following a non narrative line. Its main theme is love and its different manifestations.

Since its antiquity, its interpretation has been a challenge for scholars, but both the Hebrew and the Christian tradition argue that it must be understood in an allegorical way. The Talmud and Hebrew scholars affirm that it is a dialogue between God and Israel, while Christians, especially St. John of the Cross, maintain that it is a colloquy between Jesus and his church.

With “El Cantar de los Cantares”, FMR-ARTE began the collection “Livres del peintre”. With this new collection, FMR-ARTE wanted to follow and at the same time innovate in one of the most illustrious traditions of contemporary art: the artist’s book.

The “libre del peintre”, or book of the artist, is a work conceived and created by a plastic artist, that serves to illustrate texts of the universal culture or of a contemporary author. It is presented as the meeting between the pictorial style and the literary, a meeting of creatively living tensions of the human being.

Dimensions of the book of 34.5 x 46 x 5.5 cm.
The work has been done on paper Velin Rives of cotton of 250 grams and 160 grams of the trash of Arches (France) made in the form of round ex profeso for this edition.
