In 1784 the Spanish Crown successively sent Jos\u00e9 Antonio Calder\u00f3n, Antonio Bernasconi and Antonio del R\u00edo to investigate the ruins of Palenque, in the current state of Chiapas in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drawings and notes of the first two are reproduced in a 22 x 32 cm volume bound in parchment, as preserved in the Library of the Royal Academy of History of Madrid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The captain of the River was accompanied by Almendariz as a draftsman.
