Study book of the facsimile of the Z\u00fa\u00f1iga Book of Hours, from the 15th century, the original of which is kept in the Royal Library of the Monastery of El Escorial.

This article deals exclusively with the study book that is delivered together with the facsimile, it does NOT<\/strong> include the facsimile of the splendid and luxurious facsimile edition made in 2003 in Madrid, of which we also have copies available (you can see it by clicking here<\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

During the 15th century, the Castilian nobility, in imitation of monarchs such as Juan II or Isabel la Cat\u00f3lica, became fond of good books and formed magnificent libraries, of which the Marquis of Santillana may be a paradigm. The House of Z\u00fa\u00f1iga also highlighted in his love for books, especially the one who was master of the Military Order of Alc\u00e1ntara, Don Juan de Z\u00fa\u00f1iga, for whom splendid works were written and minied, such as Juan de Breuil’s Jouvencel, in French, which is exposed in El Escorial, and probably the Book of Hours that concerns us. A descendant of the master named Alonso de Z\u00fa\u00f1iga gave it to King Felipe II when he learned of his intention to form a large library of manuscript books in El Escorial. Today it is exhibited, among many other works of art, in Showcase 10 of the Monastery Library.<\/p>\n

This beautiful Book of Hours was also originally called by Don Gutierre de Sotomayor, count of Belalc\u00e1zar.<\/p>\n

Study book published in 2007 and prepared by the professors of the University of Valladolid, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Ruiz Asencio and Salvador Andr\u00e9s Ordax. Bound in hardcover in illustrated and gold fabric, guards with facsimile illustrations with gold. Format 20.8 x 27 cm. 168 pages. Texts in Spanish.<\/p>\n
