The Visigothic-Mozarabic Bible of San Isidoro de León is considered not only one of the rarest and most valuable medieval manuscripts but also the best-documented Mozarabic Bible in existence. Dated with great precision, it was completed on June 19, 960, at the monastery of Valeránica, and accurately engraved with the names and portraits of its copyists, the miniaturist Florencio and the calligrapher Sancho. This Bible contains all the books of the Old and New Testaments, as well as prologues, Bible commentaries, and other texts. It is written in Visigothic-Mozarabic minuscule script with initial capital letters in the Saxon interlaced style and decorated with biblical scenes.
The beauty of its calligraphy, the abundant marginal annotations in Latin and Arabic, and the extraordinary execution of its miniatures have made it a treasure and frequently requested for international exhibitions. All aspects are remarkable, whether from the perspective of paleography, history, biblical texts, or art. Florencio’s creative genius offered new avenues in pictorial art, combining elements from Saxon, Visigothic, and Islamic art with new features from Carolingian sources. In short, Mozarabic art takes a new turn in the chapters of this codex.
