Native American primitive societies have beliefs about who their guardian is. The young pubescent American Indians retire in solitude and fast to receive the spiritual purification that they will perceive through a vision in which an animal will appear, who will be in charge of instructing them and will be their protector.
These animals are the totem and are related to the clan, the guardian animals and their symbols are engraved on a mast that is placed on the facades of the houses. The totem is the center of spiritual power, used by warriors to protect themselves in battle.
The Amerindians were the first humans to inhabit the Americas for thousands of years, today they call themselves Native Americans. In Canada they are called aboriginal or native peoples. The Amerindians spread throughout America, forming hundreds of groups or tribes. Each tribe adopted its own culture, including customs, beliefs, way of life, and language.
In Canada there are several parks with protected totem poles of great beauty. We include a photo where the original totem appears, whose miniature reproduction we offer (the one on the left of the photo).
