Description

Great book study of the facsimile of the Ashburnham Pentateuch, or also known as the Tours Pentateuch or the Tours Bible. This article does NOT contain the facsimile, it is only the study book.

Published in 2007 in trilingual format: Spanish, English and German. Bound in hardcover brown cloth with gilding and illustrated dust jacket with flaps. Size 25 x 34 x 6 cm, weight almost 5 kg. 718 pages with color and black and white illustrations. Excellent texts by Bezalel Narkiss (1926-2008), who dedicated much of his life to the study of this manuscript. Translations into Spanish by Beatriz Marino López, and into German by Hiltrud Friederich-Stegmann.

The Tours Bible is the oldest illustrated Pentateuch in the world, c. year 427 (5th century). It also represents for many researchers the origin of the iconography of the Beato of Liébana. It is currently kept in the National Library of France, call number Ms. Nouv. Acq. The t. 2334.

The Ashburnham Pentateuch is the most important codex of the Western Middle Ages, the only illuminated manuscript of late classical antiquity, which includes the five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Made in the imperial scriptorium of Rome by order of the empress regent of the Western Empire, Gala Placidia, for the education in Christian doctrine of her son, Emperor Valentinian III (423-455).
