The author’s correct name is often confused by various spellings; even in this edition, the publisher uses both Khayyam and Khayam. According to Wikipedia:
“Ghiyath al-Din Abu l-Fath Omar ibn Ibrahim Khayyam Nishapuri or Omar Khayyam (in Fundéu, “Omar Khayyam”), (Nishapur, then the Seljuk capital of Khorasan—present-day Iran—, c. May 18, 1048—ibid., c. December 4, 1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet.
His name is also often found written according to the English transcription, Omar Khayyam (since English does not have the Spanish “j” sound that exists in Persian). The Arabic version, Omar al-Khayyam or Omar ibn al-Khayyam, may also appear. The literal translation of his surname is “tent maker” (related to the Spanish word of Arabic origin, “jaima”), a profession that is assumed to have been traditional in his family.
Omar Khayyam’s most notable poetic works are The Rubaiyat, a collection of up to a thousand quatrains that speak about nature and humankind. Rubaiyat is the plural of ruba’i, which means quatrain.
Reading the Rubaiyat is an introduction to Eastern literature. It contains a profound human sensibility that celebrates the delights of love and the joys of life, which, with their interplay of bitterness and optimism, shape the character of the individual, grounded in their reality. Life demands harsh sacrifices from humankind because we are slaves to our own prejudices. Amidst so much absurdity, we do not enjoy our fleeting existence. Khayyam wants to convince humankind that it is wrong and invites us to shed dogmas and doctrines in order to appreciate the tangible values of nature.
