The hourbooks, which had made their appearance in the thirteenth century, reached their greatest flowering in the fifteenth century, especially in France and the Netherlands. They became the most widespread type of religious manuscript, since it was intended for all laymen, regardless of their status, although logically their main recipients were the nobility and the incipient mercantile bourgeoisie. The interest of books of hours lies mainly in its decoration, which became a privileged space for the development of the Gothic and Renaissance miniature. The miniatures of this codex belong to a moment of maximum splendor of European art, the Flanders of the fifteenth century.
