The dowry and earnest money agreement of Miguel de Cervantes was signed on August 9, 1586, before the notary Alonso de Aguilera in Esquivias (Toledo). This legal document formalizes his marriage to Catalina de Salazar y Palacios, detailing the assets, properties, and property contributed by each party.
We provide the transcription of the modernized text (in Spanish), as it appears on the website of the Ministry of Culture.
The controversial marriage of Cervantes to Catalina: On December 12, 1584, the wedding between Miguel de Cervantes and Catalina de Palacios Salazar took place in the Church of Santa María de la Asunción in Esquivias (Toledo).
Cervantes did not observe the traditional wedding ceremony after January 7, 1585, as would have been customary, but instead left Esquivias for Madrid after the wedding.
It is also highly significant that the receipt for Catalina’s dowry, signed by Cervantes on August 9, 1586, was issued after the wedding ceremony and not before, as was customary.
Events would soon prove that his marriage to the noblewoman was not the best solution. In April 1587, Cervantes left Esquivias and his wife, beginning his long journey through Andalusia that would last almost fifteen years.
