Description

Facsimile edition of manuscript T.I.6 from the El Escorial Library (Books on Chess, Dice, and Tables by Alfonso X the Wise), consisting of two volumes: the first, a faithful full-color reproduction (including gold foil) of the 13th-century Alfonsine codex, consisting of 100 folios measuring 29 x 42 cm, bound in leather stamped with the Escurialense grid symbol and illustrated with 150 miniatures; and the second, of the same format and 400 pages, contains studies on the historical-critical, artistic, and chess aspects of the manuscript, written by Luis Vázquez de Parga, Ana Domínguez, and Ricardo Calvo, respectively, plus an annotated transcription of the text by Mechthild Crombach.

Limited 1987 edition, numbered and authenticated by National Heritage. Out of print for many years.

Both books are presented in a slipcase measuring 31 x 43 x 9.5 cm. The complete set (facsimile, study book, and slipcase) weighs 7.8 kg. All in perfect condition, like new, unused books.

If you are a chess or board game enthusiast, this codex represents the roots of a game that is not only a board game, but also an art, a science, and, above all, a mental sport. A game believed to have originated from chaturanga, practiced in India since the 6th century. A unique opportunity if you are also a discerning bibliophile.
