Description

Facsimile reproduction of the notes and drawings from the first scientific expedition to the archaeological site that gave rise to Mayistica. In 1784 the Spanish Crown successively sent José Antonio Calderón, Antonio Bernasconi and Antonio del Río to investigate the ruins of Palenque, in the current state of Chiapas in Mexico.

The drawings and notes of the first two are reproduced in a 22 x 32 cm volume bound in parchment, as preserved in the Library of the Royal Academy of History of Madrid.

The captain of the River was accompanied by Almendariz as a draftsman. His 25 magnificent watercolors measuring 25.5 x 35.5 cm are reproduced bound in leather, in a second volume whose original is in the Library of the Royal Palace of Madrid.

The complementary 240-page volume carries a study by Manuel Ballesteros.

Facsimile edition from 1993 by the publisher Testimonio in its collection “Tabula Americae”, numbered, limited and certified by the editor.
