Description

A comprehensive book about Pedro Texeira’s 1634 Atlas, Description of Spain and the Coasts and Ports of its Kingdoms. Unanimously considered the most important cartographic project of the 17th century, it is also one of the most valuable and beautiful atlases in the history of Spain.

The original 1634 codex is held in the Austrian National Library (Cod. Min. 46) and was commissioned by Philip IV from the Portuguese cosmographer Pedro Texeira. Its enormous importance is reflected in the fact that 90% of the locations depicted in it would not be reproduced in any other document until well into the 20th century. The book offered here is also the one provided by the Siloé publishing house to its customers when they purchase a copy of the facsimile edition of this beautiful manuscript as a study guide.

Hardcover binding with a color dust jacket, 25 x 34.5 cm, thick—unusual for typical luxury facsimile study books. The book comes in an open slipcase for better preservation, 24.2 x 35 x 6 cm, also unusual, lined in color to match the book’s binding. Texts in Spanish.

This book reproduces the complete codex, as well as the manuscript by Pedro Texeira containing the textual description of the expedition’s work, and its transcription. Therefore, it can be considered a complete facsimile edition, although it is not a luxury facsimile, but rather an art book.
