Description
The Historia Naturalis by Johannes Jonstonus (1603-1675) represents one of the most outstanding efforts in human history to delve into that marvelous and often mysterious world of Nature, and to compile all the vast and scattered knowledge that had been disseminated on this subject for centuries. It is the last great encyclopedic work of the Renaissance, the magnum opus of one of the greatest naturalists of all time.
The facsimile edition of the seven splendid volumes of this Historiae Naturalis, produced by Siloé publishing house since 2003, constitutes one of the most ambitious publishing projects ever undertaken in the field of facsimile, the only work in color. It pays tribute to its author, Johannes Jonstonus, one of the most important figures in the natural sciences in Europe, on the 400th anniversary of his birth.
The enormous importance of this beautiful collection is attested by the fact that for almost 200 years it was required reading in many of the most prestigious Central European universities of the time, especially those in Germany. And this is not to mention Japan, where Jonstonus’ Historiae Naturalis not only “triumphed” and spread, but also became the sole source for knowledge of the development of this science, Natural History, in the West.
The collection consists of six works in seven extraordinary facsimile volumes, hand-bound in dry-tooled leather, with a label and ribs, with individual bookcases per volume, in a limited edition of 898 numbered copies with a notarial certificate. Some of these are accompanied by textbooks that include the first Spanish version of the original Latin text and essays on the work’s content. The complete work represents an extraordinary set of engravings (almost 400 plates) that illustrate one of the most extensive natural science compilations in history.
The complete work can also be purchased here, but in this article we ONLY offer the two volumes of the “Historiae Naturalis de Arboribus et Fructicibus.” At this time, the textbook has not been published by the publisher. If it is published, we will send it to you at no additional cost as soon as it is available.
