Juan Ponce de León embodies the characteristic type of the Spanish conqueror. He went to the Indies with a will to stay, in the company of his wife and children, and not with the intention of returning to Spain enriched. He fought against the Indians when circumstances required it, but he also tried by all means to make a peaceful colonization in Puerto Rico, attracting the caciques with the affability of their treatment. He discovered a new and green land that he called Florida. His life was a constant struggle, a continuous to survive in travel, people, fight, attend to the future of their children and defend their rights before the Crown, without ever having a moment of respite. But, like all the conquerors, luck was elusive in the last and decisive moment.

Adelantado:
Formerly, military chief and politician of a border province, and in times of peace, president or greater justice of the determined kingdom, province or district, and captain general in times of war.
