Description
As a commemoration of the IV Centenary of the death of King Felipe II of Spain (1598-1998), a series of significant facsimile works were published, such as the Horoscope made by Matías Haco (also for sale here) or this Tiny Devotional, also known as Book of Hours of Felipe II.
The Tiny Devotional is a small codex discovered in the National Archaeological Museum in 1882, where it is currently guarded. Despite its small size, it is a masterpiece of the late model. It was made in one of the most fertile and prominent workshops of France during the second quarter of the sixteenth century, the Workshop of the Hours of 1520, and attributed to one of its teachers, known as the Master of the Getty Epistles (named after Myra D. Orth from the manuscript of J. Paul Getty Museum). It is the smallest codex of all those made by this Workshop, and even in the context of French miniature it was an exceptional case.
The codex has traditionally been known as a Devotion, but it is actually a Book of Hours and is therefore part of the rich tradition that, throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, made this type of text the most widespread form of a luxury devotional book. Works often linked to female patronage, it is possible that the Devotion was brought to Spain by Isabel de Valois, third wife of Felipe II.
Stylistically the 12 miniatures of the Devotion also present a high interest. In addition to its artistic qualities, visible in the refinement of the drawing, in the novel frames or in the delicacy of the color, highlighted also by an excellent state of conservation, the codex is also an important piece in the penetration of the Italian Renaissance in French art .
