Description
Facsimile edition made in Italy by ArtCodex of the manuscript preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Library, signature ms. Vat. Lat. 3747, known as the Pontifical of Boniface IX, an original from the late 14th century, made using 23 kt pure gold leaf.
The Pontifical of Boniface IX, a masterpiece of medieval art, is a jewel of sacred art and stands out among illuminated manuscripts thanks to the imagination and brilliant creativity of its illuminators. This splendid codex, which contains the ritual and prayers of papal functions, is composed of 96 richly illuminated pages, from which the enchanting glow of gold and vivid colors emerge.
The codex, created during the pontificate of Boniface IX (1389–1404), offers a very rich iconographic apparatus: most of the cards are decorated with illuminated initials and refined frames, embellished with gold and adorned with anthropomorphic elements in very intense colors. Completing the spectacular nature of this manuscript are 11 splendid full-page miniatures, dazzling with gold, with scenes depicting papal vestment ceremonies. This is an exclusive document of the papal magnificence of Rome during the Avignon captivity.
The historical and artistic importance of the codex is enormous. The Pontifical of Boniface IX is a work of art characterized by significant historical value: the images depicted, which describe papal ceremonies in detail, restore some historically lost details regarding the vestments and accessories used in 14th-century liturgical celebrations. The most illustrious example is the miniature on page 39v, which depicts Boniface IX facing a crowd during the Benedictio coram populo: this miniature recalls the famous fragment of Giotto’s fresco in San Giovanni in Laterano, where the painter depicts the gathering of the people in front of Pope Boniface VIII, on the occasion of the promulgation of the first jubilee in 1300.
The Pontifical of Boniface IX is the first facsimile, world exclusive, made with pure gold leaf (23 kt), certified by the Vatican Apostolic Library, complete and on parchment paper.
