El Lapidario was the first work of a scientific nature translated into Spanish at the request of Alfonso X el Sabio (of which in 2021 marks the 800th Anniversary of his birth). According to its prologue, a book written in Arabic on the properties of stones and their medicinal applications reached the hands of the still infant in the city of Toledo, who, advised by his physicist, Yehudá ben Mosé, decided to order its translation.
The Alfonsí Lapidary, with a strong Aristotelian imprint and indebted to the Islamic scientific currents, brings together four different lapidaries that collect the classic tradition of the study of stones, their various healing properties and their medicinal applications under the influence of the stars. But it also provides us with information on recipe books of a different nature, geographical and astronomical data.
