Description

Facsimile edition made in Italy by ArtCodex of the manuscript preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Library, signature ms. Vat. Lat. 3747, known as Pontifical de Bonifacio IX, original from the late 14th century.

The Pontifical of Boniface IX, a masterpiece of medieval art, is a jewel of sacred art and stands out on the scene of illuminated manuscripts thanks to the imagination and brilliant creativity of its illuminators. Containing the ritual and prayers of papal functions, this splendid codex is made up of 88 richly illuminated pages, from which emerge the enchanting brilliance of gold and vivid colors.

The codex, created during the Pontificate of Boniface IX (1389 – 1404), offers a very rich iconographic apparatus: most of the cards are decorated with illuminated initials and refined frames, embellished with gold and adorned with anthropomorphic elements of very intense colors. To complete the spectacularity that distinguishes this manuscript, there are 11 splendid full-page miniatures, dazzling with gold, with scenes depicting papal dress ceremonies. Exclusive document of the papal magnificence of Rome in the period of the Avignon captivity.

The historical and artistic importance of the codex is enormous. The Pontifical of Bonifacio IX is a work of art that is characterized by important historical values: the images represented, which describe in detail the papal ceremonies, return some details lost in history in terms of clothing and accessories used in the liturgical celebrations of the century XIV. The most illustrious example is represented by the miniature on sheet 39v, which represents Boniface IX in front of a crowd during the Benedictio coram populo: this miniature recalls the famous fragment of Giotto’s fresco in San Giovanni in Laterano, where the painter represents the meeting of the people in front of Pope Boniface VIII, on the occasion of the promulgation of the first jubilee of 1300.
