Description

Extraordinary facsimile edition of the Visigothic manuscript 609 (Res. 1) from the University of Santiago de Compostela, known as the “Book of Hours of Ferdinand I of León.” Its name has changed over time: it previously bore the title “Diurno of Ferdinand I” on a flyleaf.

This facsimile edition was produced in 1995 by the Madrid-based publisher Testimonio, commissioned by the Xunta de Galicia (Regional Government of Galicia). It is a deluxe, numbered edition, limited to 420 copies, and certified. This edition is completely sold out, and copies are difficult to find even on the secondhand market.

The facsimile is bound in leather with scallop shell fittings and two leather and metal clasps. Dimensions: 21 x 32 cm. 456 pages.
Complementary study book, paperback with dust jacket, 20.5 x 32 cm. 208 pages, including the complete transcription of the Latin text.

Both the codex and the study are printed in the golden ratio.

The codex was a gift from Queen Sancha to her husband, King Ferdinand I of León, Castile, and Navarre, in 1055. Its current state of preservation, after a thousand years, is excellent, and it is housed in the University Library of Santiago de Compostela.

This copy is in perfect condition and is the only one available.
